SHITAKE ALMOND RICE MEDLEY

by
Tomorrow Project

Helping Women Create Futures Today

Chef Michel Stroot specifically created this rice medley with the women of Rachel Center in mind.  This is an excellent dish to accompany roast chicken, grilled fish, sautéed shrimp or sautéed tofu.  Try it with steamed broccoli, spinach or asparagus.

The Tomorrow Project’s mission is to help women lift themselves out of poverty and develop a new sense of self-reliance, worth and hope. When you savor their delicious products envision the women washing & measuring the ingredients and spices and packaging the product.  This is more than a job to her – it’s her stepping-stone to becoming self-reliant.  Our product sales help move women to a brighter tomorrow.
The Tomorrow Project is located at 349 Cedar Street., San Diego or call 619-230-1151 for more information

Open Door also sells other Tomorrow Project products at their store located at 4761 Cass Street – corner of Cass and Missouri in Pacific Beach such as: soups, dips, and spice rubs.

We are proud to let you know our doors are open once again. We are opening our doors with a wider commitment to our community by providing a new venue for local artisans and businesses.  Open Doors will continue to offer books on subjects such as; spirituality, religions of all faiths, sustainability, peacemaking, social justice, contemporary issues, grief, parenting, gay/lesbian, family, psychology, as well as fiction, literature, and books for children.

Our new setting offers a venue to support local businesses on a four-month rotation schedule.  Presently, our sponsors are; “Café Virtuoso” a local fair trade, organic coffee roaster; “Exotic World Gifts,” whose mission is to help provide a fair monetary return to developing countries, and Midge Hyde a local artist whose paintings are displayed throughout the store.  We have many new and exciting gifts and products for you to purchase and at the same time you can make a difference in our world and community.

Starting June 27th we will have new summer hours.  We plan to be open on Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays between the hours of 10:30 AM – 5:00 PM.   Fridays and Saturdays we plan to be open between the hours of 12:00 PM - 7:00 PM.  We have an all-volunteer staff so hours can vary; please call before you stop by. Our phone number is 858-270-8642.  You can also refer to our web page at www.opendoorbks.com or our email at opendoorbooks@sbcglobal.net

Open Door will also have monthly (third Wednesday of the month) gatherings that will include author signings, mini-workshops, discussion groups and presentations on social justice and contemporary issues. Check out Calendar of Events. If you would like to be added to our email list please let us know.

Quotes

Books have been around for something over half a millennium and in those five hundred years or so, they have changed the world more deeply than any novelty before and most likely, ever since.  The big question for the future is whether or not books will survive or end up forgotten like other treasures we have cast aside for new technology.  I like to think that there will still be people who still like the feel of a book in their hands and turning each page with anticipation, will still cuddle up with classic on a rainy day, or stow away a hot romance novel in their beach bag, to be the first purchase made when going on vacation, and that your favorite children stories are passed down from generation to generation.  - anonymous

“Tell me what you read and I shall tell you what your are” – anonymous proverb

“My library shelves are the avenues of time.” Archbishop of Poitiers, c. 1100

“The contents of someone’s bookcase are part of his history, like an ancestral portrait.”
- Anatole Broyard, in A Book Lover’s Diary; The Reader’s Companion by Shelagh Wallace(1996)

“What is the use of a book,” thought Alice, “without pictures and conversations?”
